Making a Mess
July 19, 2015
CORRECTION from last week: I noted that The Daemon Portfolio is 48 pages and 87 words shorter. If anyone else noticed, I agree, that’s a waste of paper eliminating the one or two words per page. I should have said that I edited out 8,700 plus words. Hopefully, they were the ones that made eyes glaze over and kept the plot from moving at a decent pace.
I also need to edit myself better.
So, three months into this blog. It’s not nearly as interactive as I had hoped, but I am not yet at the point of “punching up” the blog with a video. Dammit, Jim, I’m a writer, not a performer!
[Again, let me know if you get the reference; if not, ask and I’ll help out].
I’m afraid agree with Edna Ferber: “Writers should be read but not seen. Rarely are they a winsome sight.”
A look around my writing room confirms this: it rather looks like a ream of paper exploded like bag of Reese’s Pieces explodes after you pull at the sides to open it: Happy New Year! Notes, advice on writing queries and researching publishers, half-written scenes with hand-written “editing” and legal pads with half pages written on them. It’s a mess! Honestly, I don’t know if I would write any better or any more if I cleaned it up and organized it. It is like walking inside my mind and wondering if it has to be this way or if some organization and tidying would not make it function a little better.
I also have to wonder if a tidier, more organized room/mind wouldn’t invite more people in to help mess it up again.
Best not tempt that particular cycle. The writing works in the mess, so the mess stays.
